About this site

This website has evolved as I have learned new technology and changed the focus of the site.
The viewmaster:
My first attempt at creating a portfolio was also my first attempt at Flash. I used this site to find my internships.
Newspaper portfolio:
I created this HTML-based site before I moved to Mexico as a way to apply for jobs when I came back.
The Swiss Army Knife:
I built this Flash site to attract more freelance jobs. Instead it helped me become the lead interactive producer for STLtoday.com.

Visual storyteller in print and online

I am an illustrator and interactive designer with an interest in visual journalism. I produce interactive and multimedia projects using ActionScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL. I combine maps, charts, video and audio for packages that provide insight into data. I use Adobe After Effects to create animations to explain complicated stories. I draw, paint and construct illustrations using real world materials and the digital equivalents.

After graduating from the Washington University School of Fine Arts, I went to graduate school to study visual journalism. I received a journalism fellowship at the Poynter Institute and taught intro and advanced courses in publication design at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

I've worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Austin American-Statesman, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Springfield (Missouri) News-Leader as a designer, infographic artist, illustrator and interactive producer.

In 2011 I joined XPLANE | Dachis Group to help businesses clearly communicate complicated stories through visual storytelling.
